Lego
Model of Shuttle with Satellite
Davis Creek Elementary 5th
grade students made a mirror with the Starshine
Project from the University of Utah to go on a satellite. It
will be launched on a the space shuttle in the spring of 1999. Students
saw a model made of Lego elements with fiber
optics and motors. Davis Creek students also have pictures of the
grinding and polishing of their #533
mirror. They plan to track the satellite in the spring of '99.
We were so excited when Glenn
took off in the shuttle Discovery that we did not take pictures.
We did get to see the flight both on TV and on NASA TV Internet coverage
through our Gateway 2000 large monitor. We had to log on four hours
before the launch to be able to see the Internet NASA coverage due to the
intense demand for viewing the launch through the Internet. The students
literally jumped for joy with tears in their eyes as they shouted,
"Godspeed, John Glenn and the STS-95 Crew." It was so nice to see
the enthusiasm for our USA NASA Space Program that had been evident in
the 1960's and 1970's.
